MATCH COMMENTS
In a heated and physical League Cup final, Rotherham 5s emerged victorious, beating Yorkshire rivals Barnsley 2-1. Barnsley put Rotherham under pressure from the first whistle, testing the Rotherham defence. Around fifteen minutes in, Barnsley managed to break through and scored the first goal of the game. Rotherham replied with their heads up, defending well and pushing forward in an attempt to draw the game level. After several chances, it was Ross Dodge that scored the equalizer where, after his third attempt, he hit the ball hard into the top of the net. The game was all level at the start of the second half and both teams came back fighting, knowing that they could do nothing less than score another goal. Rotherham seemed to be slightly stronger than the opposition and created several more chances on goal. Rotherham were then awarded a penalty flick after a Barnsley defender stopped the ball on the goal line with his foot. Dave Watson, who was also awarded the Man of the Match by the Yorkshire League, stepped up to take the shot and he was cool under pressure as he beat the keeper and placed the ball into the bottom right hand corner. From this point on, Rotherham played a defensive game in order to protect their lead as best as they could. And it was at this point Rotherham looked the more relaxed team and more comfortable with the ball. Barnsley weren’t without their chances on goal, but the Rotherham defence was too strong and prevented any late drama. Although Rotherham 5s have played more skilful hockey, they did enough to win the game and become Yorkshire Champions.
