Club Report from 27th March
3rd of April, 2010

The second team lost 1-0 to Sheffield Hallam in a closely fought local derby. It was nearly Rotherham who took the lead, when a Dean Burrows effort hit the post early in the first half. Shortly afterwards Hallam grabbed the only goal of the game through a fine individual run by one of their forwards. What followed was a scrappy affair with neither team being able to control the game. Basic errors were frequently made in a congested midfield. Rotherham were unable to dictate the pace in the second half. Despite an impressive workrate from the whole team they were frustrated by a well organised Hallam defence as they chased an equaliser. Craig Andrews had a well struck shot saved and Rotherham could have been awarded a penalty when a goalbound shot hit a Hallam`s defender`s foot. A lack of composure in attacking areas ultimately cost Rotherham as numerous free hits in dangerous areas were squandered through careless play.

After playing Kings Cross at their place and drawing 2-2, it was about
time for some serious pay back. A formidable 4th team took the field
with Alex `the beast` Cooper joining the defence for this much
anticipated re-match. Rotherham started well, piling on the pressure
camping in the Kings Cross half for much of the first half. Several
chances were made, with balls coming across the circle, only to be
missed by the Rotherham attack. Jacob Maxwell making a return to the
squad came on as a substitute, and made his presence known immediately
by scoring a goal from a short corner. The Kings Cross defence was
looking very hassled by the speed and skills of Andrew Bray, Ben Davis
and captain Flower, who were cutting them to ribbons.

The second half, saw Tony Henshaw increase his goal tally with another
well worked short corner. Dan Flower scored a deflected 3rd, with Jon
Bray pushing up front to show his real skills. Skills he has, a
plently, with Kings Cross simply giving up after Bray scored 2 very
neat goals, but missed a couple of others. A clean sheet looked
secure, with keeper Steve Rimmington having time to have afternoon tea
in the Rotherham goal such was ineffectiveness of the Kings attack.

Unfortunately, the clean sheet was not to be,  Rimmington, not wishing
to break the finest bone china, failed to put his cup and saucer down
in time to stop a final last ditched attempt from Kings. 5-1 the final
result, with great play from the entire team. A well deserved victory.

MATCH COMMENTS

Rotherham 5s were the wrong side of a 7-3 thrashing at the weekend as they ended the season away at Sheffield Hallam.  On paper the team did not look weak, yet they were overwhelmed on the field.  Numerous defending errors led to the opposition scoring seven whilst the attack struggled to have any real chances on goal.  Miles Sutcliffe provided something positive by scoring two goals and Ross Dodge scored another from a short corner.  There were some good individual performances, but the 5th team have a lot of work to do before they head to the final of the League Cup at the end of April.

NEXT WEEKS OPPOSITION/VENUE.

Saturday 24th April – League Cup Final at Adel, against Barnsley 1

6th Team 27th march 2010

The young 6th team finished of the season in the Development League with an emphatic 3 – 0 win against Huddersfield with a brace of goals from Captain Jack Hartley and one from Freddie Bowers. Rotherham dominated the first half with the midfield pair of Tom Sorsby and Man of the Match, Ricky Benton controlling the game. This dominance led to Rotherham being 2 – 0 up at half time. In a more even second half, Jack brought his total goals tally for the season to 27. Rotherham’s defence never looked in trouble and the result leaves the team at the top of their league for the second year running. During the season there have been many fine displays from individual players but Ricky was voted Man of the Season by the players in the team.
